WKLT/FOX Radio Rock the House on Opening night at Cherry Speedway
NASCAR Steve from "THE PIT STOP", which airs on WKLT, was on hand with the "Fox Box" to help celebrate opening night at Cherry Speedway this past Friday.
WLKT/FOX Radio sponsored the Best Looking Car Contest to kick off the night. NASCAR Steve, Union Kate from the morning show and Dawn Centilli acted as judges for the competition. The winners are as follows. M.O.R.A. Mini Outlaws – Bruce Dezelski, 4-Cylinder Compact – Jordan Erickson, Cruiser/Bomber – Charlie Woebbeking, Super Street Stock – Rick Wilson, Michigan Modified Association – Marc Kurth and Late Model – Adam Erickson.
In Michigan Modified action, Greg Wangler set fast time of the night with a lap of 15.803 while Jeff Cade scored the dash win over Marc Kurth, Scott Payton and Wangler. Wayne Taghon carried the checkers in the first heat race followed by Antero Tarvudd, Pat Hiller Jr. and Dan Paige. Victory in the second heat went to Larry Cade over Joe Rokos, Keith Booth and Jeff Cade. In the feature event, Larry Cade started on the poll and took the lead as the green flag flew. Roger Seig followed in a close battle with Cade for the lead. Larry held a steady line and sailed on to score the win followed by Steig, Scott Payton, Jeff Cade, Joe Rokos, Brent Banning, Bob Green, Dan Paige, Mark Nienhouse and Marc Kurth.
"The Cowboy" Steve Nieuwenhuis set the pace in Late Model qualifying with a lap of 14.821. Bob Hammar carried the checkers in the dash over Don Erickson, Eric Spangler and Nieuwenhuis. Bret Chalker made his way to victory lane in the first heat race followed by Adam Erickson, Ron Ramoie and Butch Strait. Rail Rokos scored the second heat race win over Clay Chambers, Don Erickson and Chad Wright. In the feature race, Rail Rokos took the lead as the green flag flew from the pole position with Bob Hammar in hot pursuit. Rokos ran hard and held off any challenges to score the win over Hammar, Eric Spangler, Chad Wright, Clay Chambers, Don Erickson, Adam Erickson, Brett Chalker, Bob Hinds and Ron Ramoie.
Qualifying has returned to the Super Street Stock class for 2008. Tom Zundel set the mark to beet with a lap of 16.714 and came to the front to score the dash win over Zeke Chambers, Dave Madden and Justin Clous. Last years track champion, Dan Hersey carried the checkers in the first heat race followed by Greg Grahek, Joe Fisher and Mark Howie. Victory went to Zeke Chamber in the second heat followed by Justin Clous, Tom Zundel and Kevin Stricker. In the feature race, pole sitter, Richard Clay took the early lead over Dan Hersey and Dave Madden. After several laps of close racing for the lead, Dan Hersey got past Clay to take over the point on lap 13. Hersey would go on to score the win over Clay, Justin Clous, Tom Zundel, Rick Wilson, Kevin Stricker, Dave Madden, Greg Grahek, Zeke Chambers and John Gilde.
In 4-Cylinder action, Jess Chambers scored the first heat race win followed by Tyler Wagener, Scotty Fisher and Levi McMullen. Allen Oyer carried the checkers in the second heat over Brandon Schaub, Brittany Morris and Autumn Siddall. In the feature race Tyler Wagener took the early lead but was black flagged for leaking fuel on lap #5. Jess Chambers took over the point and paced the field when caution flew for Brittany Morris who took a hard hit in the front stretch wall. Morris was transported by ambulance to the hospital but reported to be released and is doing fine. Chambers scored the win followed by Allen Oyer, Eli Hittle Jr., Joe Kelly, Brandon Schaub, Brittany Morris, Mark Phillips, Andy Nickerson III, Levi McMullen and Scotty Fisher.
Cruiser/Bomber action saw Jeremy Frye score the heat race win over Randy Day, Elroy Ozment, Jeff Spoor and Josh Hutchinson. In the feature race Randy Day with KLT morning show celeb, Union Kate riding shotgun took the lead from the pole and never looked back as he drove on to score the win followed by Josh Hutchinson, Jeremy Frye, Karl McClellan, Christopher Rice, Elroy Ozment, Charlie Woebbeking and Jeff Spoor
The M.O.R.A. Mini Outlaws would round out the field on opening night with Diug Roush picking up the dash win over John Lehn, Andrew Brock and Drew Stander. John Lehn would find his way to victory lane in the first heat race followed by Doug Roush, Andrew Brock and Ryan Reckow. Paul Buckler scored the victory in the second heat followed by Jack Freeman, Justin Ward and Tom Duford. In the feature race John Lehn jumped into the lead as the rest of field battled behind him. Doug Roush fought his way to take over second place on lap # 8. Lehn would go on to score the win followed by Doug Roush, Bud Schrader, Jack Freeman, Floyd Roush, Paul Buckler, Ryan Reckow, Tom Duford, James Freeman and Justin Ward.
